One of the most common questions home care agency owners ask about video marketing is simple: How long should a video be?

You may have heard that videos need to be short. Thirty seconds. Sixty seconds. Maybe two minutes at most.

That advice can make sense in certain situations, particularly for advertisements or short-form social media content. But when you're using video to educate potential clients, support referral relationships, and build trust, shorter is not automatically better.

For home care agencies, the better question is not “How short should my video be?” It is “How much time do I need to provide useful information to my audience?”

Why Shorter Isn't Always Better

A 30-second video can be effective when the goal is to quickly capture attention or create awareness. But home care is rarely a quick purchasing decision.

Families considering home care are making an important and often expensive decision about someone they care about. Referral partners also need confidence in the agencies they recommend.

That means your marketing needs to do more than get attention. It needs to educate and build trust.

Trying to fit every message into 30 or 60 seconds can limit your ability to answer meaningful questions and demonstrate your expertise.

People Will Watch Longer Videos When the Topic Matters

People don't necessarily stop watching because a video is long. They stop watching when the content is no longer relevant or useful to them.

One example from our work involved a roughly 20-minute video about how to convince a senior to wear adult diapers. Twenty minutes would normally be considered long for home care marketing content, yet the video became one of the strongest-performing videos on the client's channel.

Why?

The subject addressed a very specific problem that families were actively trying to solve.

Another client created an approximately 11-minute educational video addressing common misconceptions about hospice. Analytics showed that viewers were watching an average of around five minutes.

These examples reinforce an important point: when the information is relevant, people are willing to spend time learning.

So, How Long Should Your Videos Be?

There isn't one perfect number for every video.

Based on our experience creating educational video content for home care agencies, a useful starting range is often around 5 to 10 minutes.

That gives you enough time to:

Some topics may only require three or four minutes. Others may deserve 10 minutes or more.

The subject should determine the length, rather than forcing every topic into an arbitrary time limit.

Think Beyond Views

Another common mistake is evaluating video marketing primarily by how many views a video receives.

Views can be useful, but they don't tell the entire story.

For a home care agency, thousands of views from people who will never become clients or referral partners may be less valuable than a smaller number of views from the right audience.

Home care businesses still rely heavily on relationships, referrals, community connections, and word of mouth. Video can strengthen those existing marketing efforts.

For example, instead of simply publishing a video and hoping people discover it, your team can send a relevant educational video to a prospective client or referral partner who has a specific question.

Now the video becomes a resource your team can use repeatedly.

Long-Form and Short-Form Video Can Work Together

This doesn't mean short-form video has no value.

Short videos can introduce an idea, answer a quick question, or create enough interest for someone to explore a topic further.

One practical strategy is to create a strong long-form educational video first and then repurpose parts of it into shorter videos.

The longer video provides the depth. The shorter content helps distribute the ideas and direct people toward additional information.

Instead of choosing between short-form and long-form content, give each format a specific role in your marketing strategy.

Focus on What Your Audience Needs to Hear

Before recording your next video, don't start by asking how long it should be.

Start with your audience.

What questions are families repeatedly asking your team? What misconceptions do referral partners encounter? What decisions are prospective clients struggling to make? What information could help someone feel more confident about their next step?

Those questions can become valuable video topics.

Then take the time necessary to answer them clearly.

The goal isn't to make the shortest video possible. It is to create a useful resource that helps the right person understand something important.

Final Thoughts

There is no universal rule for how long a home care marketing video should be.

Thirty seconds might be right for an advertisement. A few minutes might be enough to answer a simple question. A more complex educational topic may require five, eight, or even 10 minutes or longer.

What matters is whether the content remains relevant and useful.

When your videos answer real questions and provide meaningful education, they can do more than generate views. They can help your agency establish expertise, build trust, support referral relationships, and give prospective clients the information they need to make better decisions.

Stop creating videos around an arbitrary time limit. Start creating them around the questions your audience actually needs answered.
